Not every tattoo on a tattoo artist is a good one. When you have the ability to tattoo or know a lot of people who can, tattoos can come for various and random reasons. They are not always done with a huge desire to get one or with much planning, and then some are.
The first tattoo that one ever does is usually on themselves, or maybe on the person who teaches you, or it might even be on another apprentice tattooing each other for the first time. So if you’ve been around for a while then chances are you have a few of these.
Then there’s the tattoo you get from an artist you highly respect, for the honor to be able to wear their work, or because they wanted to try something and as an apprentice you just can’t say no. You’ll have tattoos from your peers to show you recognize their hard work. Every tattoo is a milestone in ones career and has a meaning, and as obsessed tattoo artist are with technique, I believe that there is a special amount of respect paid to those “shitty” ones that outsiders just won’t understand.

Today actually marks the one year anniversary for this blog. I can’t really believe that its been that long, and am kind of impressed with myself that I have kept this up for a whole twelve months. Im trying to recollect what has happened in the past year, but its hard to pinpoint what happened when. This city has a weird way of distorting time. Im looking out my window and it looks exactly like it did six months ago.
Last night I went out to show my respects to our friend Joey who actually passed away exactly a year ago. This is the way that this city tells you about the progression of time. When something comes full circle is the only way you know its been a year. Its like that bill you never worry about paying because you only have to pay once a year, and then its shows up in your mail even though you’ve felt like you’ve just paid it. It doesn’t tell you by the color of the leaves or how the air feels when you wake up in the morning. Its a little more blunt. LA definitely isn’t about the finesse, its just straight forward.

For the past nine months I’ve pretty much worked every weekend. I didn’t mind it too much at first, but I feel like its becoming increasingly difficult to just hang out with my friends. Things happen on the weekends because that’s when everybody has time off. No one’s really available on a Wednesday afternoon, and its not that much fun drinking at an empty bar.
In terms of advancing my career its great. I have a full time job that pays the bills, and its not that hard to be productive when there isn’t anything else to do. This schedule has helped my personal work out a lot, but what’s it all for if there’s no one around to share it with?
Last week I had a Saturday off for once, and me and some friends had some breakfast and took a walk around the Hollywood reservoir. It wasn’t anything special, just a pretty slow and relaxed day, but I guess I would have felt like I was missing out if I couldn’t have gone. I could even see myself just wanting to be alone after hanging out with friends all the time. Its just ego when it comes down to it I guess. It’s never right, and its never going to be. Accept and keep moving. Be grateful for what you do have, and stop wanting so much.
