So I went back up to County Line again. This time I brought a surfboard and wetsuit along with my camera. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the area, County Line is a famous surf spot right where LA county meets Ventura county. You can find surfers almost any day, unless there aren’t any waves. Its also a famous tourist spot and destination for bikers.
While I was waiting for some surfers to approach I noticed this lady taking a particular interest in what I was doing. I went up to her to do a little investigating of my own, and it turns out she was a tourist from Vancouver. I asked her if she would pose for the camera, but she declined. I told her it was just a test, and I guess that convinced her that it was okay.
What is a test though? A test is something that you don’t take too seriously because its not the “real thing,” but all this is decided on my part. How does she know whether I’m taking this seriously or not? Whether its a test or the “real thing?” So I pretty much had her exactly where I wanted her. She wasn’t trying to throw any poses or look flattering. She was just being herself while I was committed to capture it on film. There is no such thing as a “test.” Its only a test if it comes out bogus and it needs to be redone. Every shot is treated as the “real thing.”
I like that. That’s going to be my line from now on: “don’t worry, it’s just a test.”
I wanted to get a few more shots, but I only got two this day. I had to get in the water. Sometimes we need to put the camera down and live life, instead of constantly being burdened by the desire to capture it.

Its been a while since I’ve gone out and asked a stranger to sit for a shot. Mainly because strangers intimidate me, but its something I have to get over as a photographer. Strangely enough shooting things that intimidate me seem to be the most rewarding somehow. That thrill of confronting one of your fears takes me back to the beginning, when I was learning something new each time I shot. The anticipation of seeing the shot is much greater because of what I’ve invested in them. It feels good to put that “weight” into the images. Of course the disappointment when they come out screwed up is greater also, for the same exact reasons.
I am constantly asked why I shoot film and not digital. It could be because Im just an old fashioned purist art snob, but the reasons are here. The weight of that negative carrier or roll of film that carries your invisible image that you’ve invested so much to create. That anticipation during the separation while that film is being processed, and then of course the excitement of seeing the result.
I’ll be honest. I screw up my pictures a lot. Miscalculations, light leaks, soft focus, and the list goes on. All of these things could be prevented if I had a preview screen to view my images, but this is the simplest way I can explain it to myself: anything that doesn’t involve the risk of failure isn’t worth succeeding at.

Here’s a shot I took in the desert a few weeks ago. Those little specs that look like dust are actually stars. Its a shot of the constellation Orion. Obviously, it needs a little more fine tuning, but I think I want to work in this direction a little more.
