I recently came across the work of a young Russian photographer named Tania Leshkina. She takes a lot of self-portraits and it made me realize that I hardly ever photograph myself. Maybe every once in a while to waste those extra frames at the end of a roll. So I kind of got inspired and decided to bring out my polaroid and have a little session with myself. Another thing that interested me is that I wanted to see my true self. People forget that mirrors reverse images. The only way you can actually see what you look like is through a photograph.
It seemed like a very straight forward and easy task at first, but a few problems came to light when I started. First off I could barely compose because looking through the finder all I saw was white space. Second, I could only place the camera a few feet away due to the length of the cable release. So the composition is not really a result of my eye, but chance and technical restrictions. Finally, and I totally forgot about this part, how do you focus!? I set some things up to focus on, but they were nowhere near exact. Its virtually impossible to get a sharp self-portrait.
This lack of control was a little fresh for me. It was exciting to wait and see how the photograph came out. I think its important to let the control go a little, let things happen. Hence, another reason why I’m not a huge fan of digital photography.

My photography has been a little bit stagnant these days. I just can’t seem to find subjects to photograph. Maybe its the new full-time job that has been taking up my free time, or maybe its just lack of motivation. Anyway, its been hard to photograph lately. Maybe I need to open up to more diverse subjects for a little bit. I might even just draw for a while too. That’s always relaxing to do.
These shots are from the Natural History Museum near my house. With only one day off I couldn’t get too far from the city, so I decided to check out some simulated nature. Being there put me in this pessimistic mood, thinking that maybe sometime in the near future the only way we will be able to interact with nature would be through a sheet of glass.
Hopefully I’ll have something better to share with you soon.
