My friend dropped off the new issue of warp magazine at my doorstep this morning. It had the article I shot in Japan last month about Matt&Kim. It was a good way to start the day.

Summer 2010

So I finally got a grasp on all those negs I needed to scan. It’s been just about a month since the festival, and I finally have a little edit.

This year has definitely been a summer of music for me. I got a little tired of the museums, the art openings, and galleries. I wanted something different, and music was definitely it. It all started off with Coachella which was already more than 4 months ago… I guess the summers are long in LA… I have never been a festival kid, and I guess I got into it a little bit late but, this stuff was all new to me. The energy of live music and all the people waiting in anticipation. Its different from a concert.

Being out in the open air and just being inspired… Nothing beats that. Summer definitely plays its part in my life. I’m not sure if I can say it’s my favorite season, but summer seams to always bring everlasting memories and change into my life. Its gonna be September tomorrow, so I guess summer is coming to an end… Don’t really know what’s next… I may sound kinda lame but I think I played a little too hard these past few months. Time to settle down and get some work done… Im actually kinda tired. I wanna just sit back and take it all in. Cook my food at home and make my own drinks instead of goin out. I guess I’ll tribute this post to summer 2010. It was a good one. I’m gonna miss it…

Just found out that my zine is finally out through Kaugummi Books out of France. I have yet to hold a hard copy in my hands yet, but from what I see on the website it looks pretty amazing!!! I can’t wait to see it! Its a hand numbered edition of a 100. If you want one for yourself you can pick one up here.

So my work at FujiRock is done. Super awesome festival! I recommend everybody to make it out there once. Great music out in the woods, good food, and hot springs everywhere to sooth those sore muscles from walking from stage to stage all day.

My props go out to Matt and Kim for rocking out their first show ever in Asia. They were also super kind and more than willing to do whatever I needed to get the shots I was there to take. Thanks Guys!!! Their next show is at Lollapalooza. Definitely worth checking out.

Ill be posting more shots of other amazing artists when I get back. I have tons!

My, now officially homeless, friend Anselm came by the other day after going MIA for over a month. When I saw him he had a full grown beard and smelt like…well… a homeless man… Its funny how when people start going off the deep-end they all start looking the same, even the very familiar face. He had been staying here for over a month until I eventually had to kick him out. Its not an easy task to throw your friend out knowing he has no place to go, and that he’s probably going to have to sleep on top of an air vent to stay warm…, but to stay under this roof there’s some rules and respect quotas that need to be fulfilled, and he wasn’t willing (or maybe just incapable) of meeting. Just like kids who don’t give a fuck about what their parents try to tell them, Anselm got kicked to the curb…

I think I’m just worrying about him too much… I’m sure he’ll be fine… It’s the assholes out there that I’m worried about, and by assholes I mostly mean cops. If they weren’t all cheating us out of our hard earned tax money, and did their fucking jobs right, I wouldn’t really have to worry about my friend out on the street.

I gave him a place to shower and stay for the night, fed him breakfast the next day and sent him on his way, and told him he couldn’t come back here anymore.

That night he was waiting in my backyard for me to come home.

I unlock the door and walk in…

Downtown

I’ve been asked to submit some photographs for a French zine for some time now. The only problem was that they wanted all black and white images, and I hardly ever shoot black and white these days. So I went through some older stuff to see what I could find.

For a little over two years I lived in downtown LA in a neighborhood where I lived side by side with homeless people. I never shot these intending for them to be some sort of project, but I would always go on strolls with my camera and try to capture whatever I saw. At the time these images didn’t interest me very much. They seemed a little mundane… Just images of what I saw everyday around my block. Now that I’ve moved away though, these people seized to be a part of my life, and looking at these images I realized they are charged with a certain type of energy that you can’t find anywhere else.

This little series here is very different from my usual aesthetic, but these images too are mine, and a lot of the soft images that you see in my work were taken while I was residing here. It could have been this area that influenced me to make work that represented the polar opposite of the environment that surrounded me.

I’m not sure if these guys were expecting something so dark when they asked me to compile a series for them, but I hope they like them…
